Revelation by Jeff Gordon (2013)

The apostle John begins the book of Revelation with an encouragement that God will bless those who hear and obey its message. Knowing this, and that the time is near, it is important to understand and interpret revelation through symbolism and the author's original intent. Defining revelation and how it distinguishes scripture from other texts sets the scene for how to understand the rest of the book of Revelation.\r\n

God communicates through John to write to the seven churches in Asia about their new standing in Christ and how they can anticipate His return. John's vision of Christ's deity and a closer look at the elements in the vision reveal Christ's power and motivations as the perfect sacrifice and ultimate master of death.

John writes the first of the seven letters to the churches in Asia. Beginning with Ephesus, he encourages them on their hard work, endurance, examination of claims, and their willingness to suffer without quitting. After the encouragement, John reminds them, though, that they have forgotten their first love: Christ! Churches like the one in Ephesus may be performing well, but missing the reason they are serving in the first place.

In a letter to the church of Sardis, John confronts their state of being a "spiritual sloth". Digging into the dangers of this state and how it offends Christ, Christ initiates a wake up call and initiates a treatment plan for Sardis and anyone stuck in this apathetic state. Christ calls people to respond by repenting, strengthen their involvement in what they are still doing correctly, remembering what they have heard and obeying it, and to be inspired by people who are going the distance for God.

John's letter to the church of Philadelphia is one of encouragement and promise. Christ's recognizes their focus and faithfulness to His Word and their intent on sharing the gospel with others. Christ rewards their faith with four promises: 1) access to God and more opportunities to share their faith, 2) vindication from people who mock them, 3) protection in difficulties, and 4) "complete and lasting security" in His Kingdom! The dynamic between trust in God and His provisions is expanded upon, emphasizing the importance of meditating on Scripture.

Worship is a recognition of God's power and holiness. It develops from a humility that is born of a recognition of our standing before God. John's description of the angels' worship in this passage displays that worship is meant to be continual and out of gratitude.

John details seeing Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, represented as the ransom for God's people. The Lamb was slaughtered, but was able to take the scroll that no one else could open, and he was declared worthy of it. With reference to Exodus 12 and Isaiah 53, this vision symbolizes the gospel message: that Christ died in our place to offer salvation to all people.

John describes the next part of his vision: The Great Tribulation. The Lamb of God breaks the first four seals on the scroll, releasing four horses and their riders (one of conquest, one or war, one of famine, and one of death). The fifth seal released those who were martyred, and the sixth released natural disasters. The seventh seal released plagues, evil spirits, and God's judgment. The length of time between the beginning of the tribulation and God's final judgment proves His desire to reach out to lost people and His goal of redemption.

John describes a vision of a great, red dragon that God protects a woman from. The woman is pregnant and gives birth to a child. The dragon pursues her and attacks the rest of her children. The dragon represents Satan; the woman represents Israel; and the child represents Jesus. The vision illustrates how there is a hidden war going on around us, and Satan uses humans to fight.

John describes The Beast, who appears in the next part of his vision. The Beast is given power from the Dragon (who was described in a previous passage to represent Satan). John describes how The Beast will blaspheme God, have a miraculous recovery from an injury, emerge from a Geo-political empire, and gain worldwide dominion during the Great Tribulation. The Beast will persecute God's people and commit The Abomination of Desolation, an act where he will claim to be God. He will deceive many into worshiping him. A second Beast will rise up and support him, initiating the mark of the Beast (which restricts anyone from buying or selling without it). Ultimately, their reign is of complete dominance and control, but as Revelation 11:3-13 shows, God will continue to pursue people and snatch victory from apparent defeat.

John describes the next scene in his vision: a prostitute called Babylon. This prostitute will parade around like a false church, fooling others into turning away from each other. She is the ultimate counterfeit church, having worldwide influence, wealth, and political power. She will persecute true followers, and she will ultimately be annihilated. The way to avoid being trapped in a spiritual deception like this is to establish truth-based friendships.

John elaborates on Babylon, now as a second personality. Besides the harlot that was described in the previous chapter, Babylon is now described as The Great. Babylon now represents a drive within humanity to create a God-tight society, or a society focused on materialism. Materialism is described as dangerous because of its seductive affect on individuals and society, and it is run by Satan. Individuals will need to recognize how they relate to the material world (a list of probing questions is included), and then choose how to respond to this knowledge.

The next piece of John's vision depicts the end of the battle, when Christ comes back and defeats all evil. Heavy on the wrath of God, the passage illustrates that evil is temporary. The lack of knowing when this will happen creates urgency in making a decision about Christ's role in one's life, while the certainty of this event lets believers carry on without bitterness or worry, knowing that God will judge and avenge evil one day.

John describes what comes after the end of the final battle: the Messianic or Millennial Kingdom. Christ rules this kingdom for 1000 years (which takes place before the New Heaven and New Earth) with social justice, and care for the poor. Spiritual enlightenment, joy, and biological change will characterize this era of restoration. In this time, the entire world will witness Christ as ruler, the evil heart of humanity will be revealed, and the power of God to destroy Satan will be displayed.

John describes a scene where the Book of Life is opened, and the dead are judged by God. Anyone whose name did not appear in the Book of Life was thrown into the "lake of fire", which represents Hell. While considering different perspectives on Hell, Scripture is clear that Hell is eternal and a choice. God's wrath and goodness are questioned and explained, and Christians are encouraged to share the Gospel to help people make their own decision about how they want to spend eternity.

After John describes Hell, he changes gears in this passage to focus on Heaven. The passage and other supporting verses in the Bible describe Heaven as: 1) "earthy" in some way, 2) interesting and relational, 3) living with God, and 4) free of brokenness. The importance of choice by every individual is emphasized. Christians are encouraged to think more about Heaven and look forward to it.

Continuing to consider Heaven, this passage brings one to consider why God would welcome sinners into Heaven. Through this and other verses in the Bible, it is clear that He does this out of a desire to relate with His people. God created people in His image, and He worked through them to restore their relationship with Him. The new "Temple" is revealed to be God now dwelling with His people, instead of separately from them. There is a large reference from Tozer's "The Pursuit of God".

Expanding on John's vision of the New Jerusalem, this passage and other verses referenced explain many other things that God will make new. These apply to Christians and include a new standing before God, a new relationship with Him, a new role and purpose, a new community and destiny, and a new power. This is something to anticipate and be excited about, and it is open to anyone who hears this message and responds.

Building off of John's description of the New Jerusalem, this passage describes the incredible future that awaits Christians in Heaven. Among the qualities listed are no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain; no more evil; and God's presence forever! This knowledge of eternity should affect Christians by encouraging them to want to see more people there with them. It also allows Christians to know that their suffering is temporary.
