A zealous, excited response is normal for those who have encountered Christ. The un-energized Christian is a living contradiction. If our zeal for using our gifts dies down we can "fan the flames" using God-given means through practice, diligence, and urgency. We look at several keys to earnestness and how developing this trait has less to do with feelings and more to do with determination and urgency.

Using your spiritual gifts or building a ministry is God's will for us but fear can get in the way of this goal. Fear holds us back from doing what God wants. It makes it very hard to take risks and ultimately leads to self-protection. God's will is that Christians overcome fear. Through faith and reliance on the Holy Spirit, a life of timidity can be transformed into a life of bold love. A life of power, love, and sound judgment can meet the needs of a dying world.

God has entrusted us with the precious treasure that is the Word of God. It is our responsibility as Christians to accurately impart the Word to other reliable Christians. The best way to impart this truth is by working one-on-one with individuals and studying the truth in the context of a close friendship. We call this discipleship. Through discipleship, we can multiply the amount of quality Christians that are committed to sharing the truth with others.

True spirituality is caught and taught within the context of close, intentional relationships. This is the main method of evangelism that was used by Jesus and the early church fathers through multiplication. Modeling this method involved entrusting sound doctrine about grace to reliable men.

God's grace empowers us to be good workers for the Lord. Those who work hard under God's grace take a stand on truth. Paul's audience does not live a life like this. They have instead drifted away from the truth and have shame-filled lives. Paul reminds them of the foundation of God's truth -- we were designed by God to know Him personally and are motivated by His love and commitment to us. With this core truth in mind, we can run away from sin and run toward righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace.

We're designed to live in union with God. In the last days people will live separately from God and for self. Living for self is a broken path. We try to gratify the demands it lays without any lasting satisfaction. When we put pleasure-seeking at the center, the thing that used to create pleasure doesn't do the job anymore. These are the dynamics of addiction and become a devastating habit that ends up taking us over. God gives us an alternative so that we can have a growing sense of freedom from the enslaving habits that take us over.

What is the main purpose of the Bible? Where did the Bible come from? Why would we believe that it is truly God-breathed? Believing in the Bible is all or nothing; disbelieving in part of it discredits the whole thing. No credible scholar argues that the Bible isn't historically true. The Bible was also recognized as scripture by the apostles, the early church, and Jesus himself. If the Bible is true, then Jesus is truly the resurrected Messiah.

Paul is looking at the end of his life with a positive perspective. He has persevered in his life with the Lord with faithfulness. He now looks ahead to the rewards that God will give him in heaven. These rewards are available to anyone who has a long-term perspective that we live in eternity. There is more to life than meets the eye because the way we lives our lives have an eternal impact.
